The Political Gauge is a political test that measures where you stand on the political spectrum. Unlike many tests that simply measure whether you are liberal or conservative, the Gauge places you on a two-dimensional grid consisting of fiscal and non-fiscal issues by taking a look at your views and the depth of your beliefs.

For each of the twenty categories below, please select the statement that best matches your personal views. Do not spend much time analyzing - pick the statement that your intuition most connects with. After that, select how strongly you feel about the issue.

On Non-Fiscal Issues, you rank as a Moderate Conservative (73).
On Fiscal Issues, you rank as a Strong Conservative (83).

Your score is on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being fully liberal and 100 being fully conservative.

another cool political test

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: 2.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.03

n the introduction, we explained the inadequacies of the traditional left-right line.

In the introduction, we explained the inadequacies of the traditional left-right line.

If we recognise that this is essentially an economic line it's fine, as far as it goes. We can show, for example, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and Pol Pot, with their commitment to a totally controlled economy, on the hard left. Socialists like Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Mugabe would occupy a less extreme leftist position. Margaret Thatcher would be well over to the right, but further right still would be someone like that ultimate free marketeer, General Pinochet.

That deals with economics, but the social dimension is also important in politics. That's the one that the mere left-right scale doesn't adequately address. So we've added one, ranging in positions from extreme authoritarian to extreme libertarian.

I notice that you're located in Southern CA. Are you a transplanted Midwesterner? Your test scores would peg you as having the same values as those living in the Red States (otherwise known as "fly-over" country). Just curious.

Born in Ohio, lived in Texas until I was about 11 years old. I Used to visit both frequently until I was 17. I'm 43 now, but have always had both in my mind when referring to "home." I don't believe that enough time was spent in either place to influence my political views, and they certainly were not influenced by my parents. They voted for McGovern.

I'm not sure where I developed my politcal views. Seems like common sense to me, but what do I know? Most social (non-fiscal) issues don't have much of an effect on me or mine so my opinions tend to run towards "I don't care." Except for the 1st and 2nd amendments, I have very strong feelings on what I consider the two most important entries in our Bill of Rights. Fiscally, I am sick and tired of the government pissing away our money.

Would this be the "test" that tells you that if you support increased regulation of bedroom behavior and religion, you are "conservative"?

Garbage in, garbage out.

This test resurfaces on BBS's every six months or so, as newbies re-discover it and start bleating about how wonderful and thorough it is... without thinking through what it is actually telling them. They'll dump it pretty soon. Again.
