Obama Gets the Coveted Jane Fonda Endorsement
Rick Moran
It may have been Jane Fonda's most difficult decision. Who do I impart the kiss of death to by endorsing them for president?
Jane Fonda, the actress and ardent anti-Vietnam War advocate who visited North Vietnam during those hostilities, has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president.
There were no formal ceremonies for the endorsement. In fact, the Obama campaign may just be learning about the actress's approval now as word spreads like lit gunpowder via the Internet.
Fonda was eating out last night and exited the restaurant, ignoring as celebrities often do the assembled press contingent. But a video camera was rolling as she approached the street and someone, perhaps just trying to get her to turn around for a picture, shouted out at her back, "Who are you going to vote for?" There was a moment of silence. Then, the actress did turn around toward the cameras, paused and with a smile said simply, "Obama!" Then she got into a car and drove away.
Fonda, like most Hollywood liberals, was torn between Hillary and Obama.. But in the end, it was probably Obama's anti-war position that tipped the scales in his favor.
The irony, of course, is that Fonda's most famous moment came when she was in North Viet Nam manning an anti-aircraft gun to shoot down American flyers - an image John McCain might not appreciate since it was those same anti-aircraft batteries that shot him down over Hanoi, leading to his torture and imprisonment.
Ironic convergence is a bitch, ain't it?

That's an ouch. She should have been smarter than to do that.

Second prize: Two Jane Fonda endorsements.
Mundame, if she were smart, she wouldn't have gone to North Vietnam, posed on an enemy anti-aircraft gun, and gushed about how nice it would be to see American planes in the sights.

An endorsement from a traitor is hardly what a candidate needs to win. Unless that candidate is an extreme-left Democrat, and sometimes not even then (as in Obama's case).

Okay... I think I am about to rescind my, "I think Obama will win in November", prediction. I had said, that I didn't think the Jeremiah Wright controversy would stick, but if Jane Fonda has endorsed Obama... well, John McCain sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office seems much more likely.

Yes, well, I have to admit you have a point there.
I thought so at the time, actually. I was anti the Vietnam War, but I worked it through when she went over and realized that, you know, that was actually treason!!
I suppose the government didn't arrest her because of the fear of real revolution among the young people who hated that war and were dying in it in large numbers. Her father was a famous and revered actor (they didn't get along) and she was popular for Barbarella and such. So they let it go.
Now they can't arrest anyone for treason, I guess.

Fonda's endorsement won't be noticed.
Any reporting on it in papers such as the NY Times, Washington Post etc., will appear on Page 32, below the ads for lettuce and used cars. Any any pictures such as the ones I posted above, will be conspicuously absent.
You know the routine.

Yeah, I know, it will be buried deep in the papers although the internet will assist in its dispersal.
However, her endorsement of him won't help him one bit. Seems to me, like if she really wanted him to win, she would have come out endorsing John McCain. :laugh2:
Now, that one the NY Times would have printed front page. ;)

Wait, wait!! I think you've got something there, Immanuel.
What voter bloc is Jane Fonda IN? Older women! And that group is going for Clinton very strongly.
I bet she does understand that hers is a negative endorsement --------- and that's why she said Obama. To help Hillary.

Yeah, right below the picture of McCain with his face purple and his blood pressure spraying out of his ears when he heard about it.
McCain's next speech after getting a Jane Fonda endorsement, would be interesting, to say the least. After all, he was flying one of the planes she was so enthusiastic about seeing the NVA shoot down.

I don't understand why Jane didn't endorse McCain. Since they both befriended the North Koreans while in that country.
Vets may despise Jane, but they should look at the big picture. McCain has been selling out Vets and POW/MIA groups since his election to Congress.

I guess it would make sense for her to endorse both then.

You know, back in 2004, I remember Jane Fonda coming out and apologizing what she did in Vietnam, and I still think she was sincere at the time. I, personally, was willing to forgive and watched to see if she'd stick to it. At that point, she could have faded back into obscurity and try not to drown in the guilt of the awful thing she did, but then the attraction of the lights and the cameras got to her again and before I knew it, she was right back where she was, having learned nothing. To be honest, I feel sorry for her, like I do all the other starlets who throw away their dignity in exchange for an ounce of fame.
