What happened?

This was to be so easy for the Dems this year. Hillary was to stroll to the nomination. Rudy was going to lead Republicans in the fall campaign

Besides, forget holding the election, Dems were to strut into the WH without a strugggle

April 03, 2008
The Year That Wasn't
By Victor Davis Hanson

2008 was supposed to have been an ideal year for the Democratic Party. There's an unpopular, lame-duck Republican president presiding over an iffy economy and an unpopular war. Plus, the Democrats won big in the 2006 elections, and there's no Republican vice president in the race to draw on the power of incumbency.

No wonder that for much of 2007, the polls suggested that the only mystery would be by how much Sen. Hillary Clinton would beat former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the general election.

Indeed, for Democrats not to walk into the presidency in November 2008, the conventional wisdom was that the absolute unthinkable would have to transpire.

And now it almost has.

The Republicans have done something unimaginable in making Sen. John McCain the presumptive nominee. And so have the Democrats in allowing their primary season to drag on.

On the Republican side, McCain, not too long ago, was running far behind in the primaries, and his maverick positions enraged influential conservatives. Yet he proved to be the only Republican candidate who had any chance of capturing moderate and independent voters. And for all their bluster, most die-hard conservatives now seem like they're going to hold their noses and vote Republican.

On the Democratic side, Clinton was stopped cold - but still has yet to be finished off by Obama. Now we can expect months more of infighting. As the Democrats raise tens of millions to destroy themselves, McCain can only sit back and smile.

Rudy ran a lousy campaign.

You should be more worried about your own party. The war rages on, and the Clintons will stop at nothing to win

Libs like you loved it when the Clintons used the same tactics against Republicans. Now that they are using those same tactics against a black lib - you are pissed

another one in a string of pronostications from you?

This campaign is energizing democrats. Look at the numbers of people who voted in democratic primaries versus the republican primaries. Our country is sick of Bush and McCain is nothing more than a third term of Dubya... America doesn't WANT a guy who will keep us in Iraq for a hundred years...I don't know whether you knew that.

It is a fact. Show me a link where it proves either Hillary or Obama will be able to win enough delegates by June 3, when the last primary is held

The Dems stupid system of rewarding the loser of the primary with delegates is coming back to haunt them

Hillary wil not drop out until the last possible moment

of course you are correct that neither candidate will have enough "pledged" delegates prior to the convention. that is not in question. that does not mean that you are right that the matter will go to the floor of the convention unresolved. I believe that the superdelegates will announce their choices well in advance of the convention.

Like I said...your track record on prognostications this election season has been piss poor. I think my party will come out of the convention unified behind a candidate and that candidate will win in November.

And how the electoral map looks today is pretty meaningless, wouldn't you say? answer my question: Did the swiftboat ads cause Americans to turn away from Bush and vote for Kerry??

and once again. Nobody wants to surrender in Iraq. And who would we be surrendering to? If we turned our military encampments and equipment over to the legitimate government of Iraq and left their country to them, who would that be surrendering to?

You never seem to be able to answer that question...just like you never seem to be able to explain how Iran is supposedly backing Al Qaeda or how Al Qaeda will supposedly rule Iraq against the will of the shiite majority and use the oil revenues to run a big AQ training camp..... none of those hairbrained assertions of yours holds water and you know it!

Taxes are not good for the economy. They decrease economic activity, they do not create incentives for investment and risk taking, and they do not inspire companies to expand and hire people

There is less money in the pockets of workers to spend, and less money for companies to hire, invest, and expand

Again, how will higher taxes on worker and companies revive the economy MM. If the economy is the top issue for you guys, how will Dems tax America into prosperity?

we won't pass new taxes on workers and we will give tax BREAKS to companies that create jobs here. Making rich folks pay a few percentage points more in taxes won't hurt the economy... when they WERE paying those few percentage points more during the Clinton years, the economy was booming and tons of new jobs were being created.

Again... the country trusts democrats on the economy...and most of the other key issues... and they are tired of the republicans who have driven the foreign policy into a ditch and the economy into a ditch as well.

You assume some overly simplistic linear relationship between taxes and the health of the economy that does not exist. But RSR and "overly simplistic" go together like cake and ice cream.

Give tax breaks to companies that create jobs and penalize those who send jobs overseas. give subsidies to alternative energy industries that will create jobs and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

When yu increase taxes you reduce revenues. There is no incentive to wrok harded, exannd your company, or to hire people

So you want more government regulation on business who try to flee higher taxes and those who find cheaper ways to do operate their business

Why not drill for the oil we have within the US? One oil find out west will increase our domstic supply by a factor of 10. Plus we have oil in Alaska, and in the Gulf

Again, lower taxes increases revenue. For the last 5 years revenue to DC has gone up by double digits.

The economy was not in recession as Clinton claimed when he took office. Republcians took over 2 years later and psending was cut

Welfare reform where people were forced to get a job

So far you have not shown where $2 trillion in new taxes is going to help the economy

Nor have you shown where more government interference on how a company runs it's company is helpful

Or why we should not drill for the oil we have within our own borders

Again...funny spin...all the good stuff during clinton was because of the business cycle and republicans...all the bad stuff during Bush was because of the business cycle and democrats.

ANd clearly, taxes will help to varying degrees based upon where they are spent....if they are spent fixing health care or education or creating new jobs in alternative energy industries, or giving breaks to companies that create jobs here, the results will be positive. If they are spent flushing money (and blood) down the toilet in Iraq or by building bridges to nowhere, then tax revenues are NOT that helpful.

Frankly, I'm sick of the fight between Obama and Hilary, it has been nothing but divise, and most the party realizes it. Jesus, Obamas is still ahead after everything, and yet, you still have Clinton people saying, "Oh well, he would make an excellent running mate for Hilary" to treat like a punk kid.

Obama meanwhile, going up against clinton, has had to cowboy up, becasue she really will just kick you right in the balls, but now, they're both just screwing themselves, they're not evening spending against McCain, or even treating one another with any sense of decorum. I still remember the debates where John Edwards got forgotten about, so that Hilary and Obama could take extra swipes at each other. It was brawl outside of a Jerry Springer show.

It reflects poorly on the party, and will drive voters away from them. This was supposed to be an absolutely surety for them, and they are pissing it down the toilet cause they can't leave the playground brawl.

I find it funny Dems loved the Clintons when they were using these same tactics were used against Republicans

In the end, I don't think the superdelegates are going to side with Clinton, she's gotten too ruthless with tactics, and will be too divise to keep the Dem majority secure. If Obama loses, he won't take the VP alongside Clinton, she done too many dirty tactics, and the Dems will lose a large amount of the minority vote in the process.

In the meantime, both Hillary and Obama are spending tons of money, and blooding each other up. Their supporters are going after each other, and top Dems are at each others throat

Well, she has 35 years of experience, you know, except she's only been a senator for a term and a half, with no prior office held.

She's also been under fire from the airport in Bosnia, you know, except for that part where they had a presentation ready for her that included a little girl reading a poem.

Oh, and btw, even though she publically help support NAFTA, she didn't support it (behind-the-scenes), and is only liable for Bill's good decisions while in office.

Oh, and then there was that jackass "3 am" ad, yeah, that was the height of running a campaign with dignity.

I'm not saying Obama has made up for lost time, but he was definitely not the initial agressor in this fight.

Obama has ben caught in many lies recenly. Most related to his racust pastor

But here is one where he did not need to lie, but did so anyway

Obama Overstates Kennedys’ Role in Helping His Father.

Addressing civil rights activists in Selma, Ala., a year ago, Sen. Barack Obama traced his “very existence” to the generosity of the Kennedy family, which he said paid for his Kenyan father to travel to America on a student scholarship and thus meet his Kansan mother.

The Camelot connection has become part of the mythology surrounding Obama’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. After Caroline Kennedy endorsed his candidacy in January, Newsweek commentator Jonathan Alter reported that she had been struck by the extraordinary way in which “history replays itself” and by how “two generations of two families — separated by distance, culture and wealth — can intersect in strange and wonderful ways.”

It is a touching story — but the key details are either untrue or grossly oversimplified.

Contrary to Obama’s claims in speeches in January at American University and in Selma last year, the Kennedy family did not provide the funding for a September 1959 airlift of 81 Kenyan students to the United States that included Obama’s father. According to historical records and interviews with participants, the Kennedys were first approached for support for the program nearly a year later, in July 1960. The family responded with a $100,000 donation, most of which went to pay for a second airlift in September 1960.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton acknowledged yesterday that the senator from Illinois had erred in crediting the Kennedy family with a role in his father’s arrival in the United States. He said the Kennedy involvement in the Kenya student program apparently “started 48 years ago, not 49 years ago as Obama has mistakenly suggested in the past.”

You remember where I stated Obama's making up for lost time? The worst Obama has managed is to have an asshole preacher, which isn't him, and isn't his campaign. Clinton has deliberately and knowingly lied because she thought she wouldn't get snagged by it, and only just lying, but lying poorly because she, much like Obama, has only one term of office under her belt at this point, and she doesn't want anyone to catch that.

right, because Obama couldn't possibly have been told something false, not anywhere in his whole life. It's not the same as "I was under fire the moment we got off the plane". One could be an exaggeration by his father passed on to his son (cause lord knows, a dad in the navy would never get caught tellin' sailor stories to his kid), the other is directly and quickly proven lie with a single look at some video tape (Being read poetry by a little girl, not quite the same as being shot at, which I say from the experiences of having been to a poetry reading, and having been shot at).

I mean shit, when that stuff happened, Obama was what, one year old? I highly doubt he was keeping up on current events, or that he studied it extensively, kind of like why I just accept the tales my dad's tells of his youth.

It is billions in new taxes

House OKs $18B in New Taxes on Oil Companies
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

WASHINGTON — The House has approved $18 billion in new taxes on the largest oil companies.

The money collected over 10 years is intended to provide tax breaks for wind, solar and other alternative energy sources and for energy conservation.

The measure passed by the House by a 236-182 vote Wednesday as lawmakers cited record oil prices and rising gasoline costs.

Senate Democratic leaders say they will put the bill on a fast track and try to avoid a Republican filibuster. The White House says the bill unfairly singles out the oil industry. President Bush is expected to veto the legislation if it passes Congress.

Rep Jim McDermott, D-Wash., urged lawmakers to "stop the madness of subsidizing oil companies" when the industry earned $123 billion last year.

"Gas prices have been soaring," added Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., noting that across much of the country people are "struggling to pay energy costs that have skyrocketed in a harsh winter."

But Republicans contended the tax provisions would reduce investment in oil and gas development and lead to higher prices.... "This bill singles out one industry," complained Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas.

1994 and was coming of "age" 21. i was sick and tired of the "american" "life", i wanted change. i thought this country was immoral, and that technology (the internet just happened when i left in aug 05) was resposnible for rapidly accelerating our decline. so i picked an island in the middle of the pacific ocean....no electricity, running water, nothing, just life and living.

fell in love with with the "simple" lifestyle. funny thing though, the island residents who i thought would be superior to me in terms of morality and thinking, well, they take the cake on human sins -- jealousy, fighting, what not, they are the same as us. and i could not blame "society" or some past wrong (as you so often do) for their faults............their remoteness made such thoughts silly.

From the American Thinker. There is a way to save the Dem party

The only way to save the Democratic Party
Jeff Dobbs

The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is a quagmire.

It is a civil war.

It is fratricidal.

It is an act of hara-kiri.

It is a murder-suicide.

No matter which of its two remaining candidates secures the nomination, there appears to be no good end possible for the Democratic Party.

Or is there?

The problem is - over the last eight years the Democratic Party has completely given itself over to unrestrained hatred. Hatred is not something you can just switch on and off. Once you allow yourself to be consumed by it - hatred must find a place to go.

Hatred abhors a vacuum.

Now that George W. Bush is no longer a participant in a presidential election, Democrats have lost the unifying locus of their hatred, and that hatred has found its place in being hurled upon the Democratic Party's own candidates.

The result of this tragic situation leaves the Democratic Party with only one viable option:

Repeal the Twenty-Second Amendment

Democrats everywhere should be working feverishly to ensure that President Bush can be placed on the ballot.

Yes, it has come to this.

The only person who can save the Democratic Party is George W. Bush.
