I got adobe photoshop elements 5.0 for christmas and trying to learn how to use it. If anyone has experience with editing any advice would be appreciated.

This is the tree/rock shot, my camera is just a point and click olympus 410, edited:

It is just a quick fix edit. I want to have my pictures look like DMP's or MisterBlue (though he is from the old site have not seen him here, unless new name) but I don't think any editing can replace a SLR with awesome lenses.

Hell no, cold is good. My wife is from Canada and she really misses the seasonings. I lived in the NW for 10 years an miss it too. Post some, she would love it.

My personal opinion on this shot, I would have liked the tree to be further to the left, with the mountain or hill towards the center (and not in the midst of the trunks of the tree)

Very little of photography is actually camera-related. You can take really good shots with P&S if you have strong composition to your photos. FWIW, I started using elements 4.0 a little while back and like it a lot. Keep at it! :)

I am not sure about simply "shots." I mean their photos are clear, colorful and majestic. The richness in color depth is very telling. We could move my shot, though that would not change the composition of the picture. The Rock in the center looks weird, as this way, it is like the tree is "holding" the rock. Then again, that is solely aesthetic.

I am wondering about the power of cameras and photoshop or other type programs.

Thanks for your input. :)

You can take a great picture with any camera. The major problem I see with this photo is that the composition doesn't do much for me. The lens flare from shooting towards the sun is troublesome as well.

A nicer camera and good photo editing can only take you so far. I'd wager that if you took this same photo with a DSLR, and developed it to the fullest using PS, it wouldn't be much different.

I'm not sure if that helps at all? Is there something specific you wanted to edit/fix?

Good tips. I did not see that flare in the view though when I took it. My viewscreen is hard to see and when I use the non LCD view the flare would not show up either.

Thanks for the tips. I like photography and will keep on improving.

That is one of the areas that a P&S camera fails. The LCD is nearly impossible to see in bright light, and the viewfinder doesn't show you exactly what the lens is seeing. An SLR is better for that since you are looking through the actual lens.

Hi Yurt,
This is what I did real quickly with pieces of a number of your shots to get rid of parking lots, cars and etc. Obviously I added my own sky which would have looked better if I would have had one from there. I try to shoot a bunch of extra shots around the one that I know that I'll want in order to have stuff to clone from that is shot in the same light and etc. It is a different way of thinking, it's trying to plan for the photoshop version. I have had to do this a lot with the work I do.

Last year I was assigned some golf courses in Dallas to shoot for a book that was coming out this spring. I had no choice but to shoot golf courses that had already gone dormant, the trees weren't too bad but the grass looked dead and the sky was white. I shot it anyway and spent about 10 hours in Photoshop completely rebuilding the photo. I used a sky that I had shot the day before, greened up the grass, added some leaves and used the same sky inverted for the reflection in the water. I even repainted the flag stick.

You really can't believe anything you see today, I'm not worth a shit at photoshop compared to the people that do it all the time and have the faster machines with more memory, a wacom tablet.....all the tools. Photoshop is an incredibly complex program that I feel I have only scratched the surface of after 10 years of using it.

Did not know that about SLR, but it makes sense that I can't see the full image with P&S. I knew that actually from reading the instructions, but still get disappointed at home when I see the real image. Definately getting an SLR, might be a few months, so please view my pics with the understanding of my P&S. I will work on the composition though.

Sitarro:

uh, hmm, uh, ummmh, wow. That was so cool. I actually had to show my wife the differences, well she was glancing over from the laptop, but still funny to see her reaction cause she was there and to see the water so close to the tree and that mysterious windsurfer in that pic (our favorite tree) was incredible.

Thanks.
