Colombian Attack Sparks War of Words

CUCUTA, Colombia (AP) — Venezuela and Ecuador took their growing conflict with Colombia to the diplomatic front, seeking international condemnation of Colombia's deadly assault on a rebel base in Ecuador.

The two countries tightened their borders and were deploying thousands of troops, while Colombia on Tuesday pointed to documents found in a slain rebel leader's laptop that it claimed was proof of stunning links between the leftist guerrillas and Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Ecuador rejected a Colombian apology for the cross-border strike as insufficient, and sought to rally opposition during an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States.

The meeting was convened in Washington to help defuse one of South America's most volatile crises in years. Venezuela's justice minister declared that war "has already begun."

Yeah, no part of this is good. You know Chavez is just looking for an excuse, any excuse, to invade. If for no other reason than the fact that the U.S. supports Columbia and its President. He's been looking for an opportunity to poke a stick in our eye, this could be it.

Well if we're going to "help," we better start pulling our military resources out of Iraq now, because as it is, the bulk of our war machine is over there.

Odds are they're going to need help, I get the impression that Chavez as quite a formidable force at his disposal.

We can't do much... we don't have enough military left. Practically everything we have is tied up in Iraq. Commanders have been warning against this for years, that we're spread too thin. Now bush is making promises to help Columbia.... well, with WHAT? More money? Troops? Both? Fuck.... when will this war mongering end? When we're broke? When we need a draft? We better just keep our butts out of this stuff for awhile... let 'em fight it out. It's none of our business.

Well there's mass killing going on in Africa, but, there's no oil there. So bush never says crap about it. Oh but there's a lot of oil down there in south America, so by God bush is all over that. First little hint of a skirmish and he makes promises we can't keep. I wish that fool would shut his fucking mouth.

If a war breaks out between Colombia and Venezuela, my sister's 17-year-old charge has already stated her desire to go down in fight. She thinks the U.S. should abandon Iraq and use all its weaponry to bomb Venezuela.
Of course, she was born in Colombia.
My sister is pretty worried about this, of course.

Colombia's own military will handle defending their country. All they will need from us is material and money. We can can assist them with intel and air strikes. Not likely we will need to put ground troops in. chavez has been looking to start something for a long time. This is his excuse. Draws attention from his poor management of his country.

Any combat we get involved in will be primarily naval and air strikes. A naval blockade will make life really miserable in venezuela.

Perhaps we can issue letters of marque and grab tankers leaving Venezuelan ports...

If it becomes a matter of a huge oil shortage watch how quickly we crush em. Security of this country includes economic security as well. We could clean out some terror training camps as well.

Well there's oil there... lots of it... and it's a whole lot closer to us than Iraq... so if we're going to fight over oil, we ought to pull out of Iraq and redeploy down south. Hell we could even drive there.
