View Full Version : Michelle Obama: "For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country"

It never takes long for liberals' real opinion of America to come through. Apparently Barack's wife feels that for the last 20 years at least, America has NOT been a place to be proud of.
And the only difference now? Soon a leftist extremist might be running it. That, and ONLY that, makes it all better.
How typical.
I wonder if her husband feels any differently?

MILWAUKEE -- So what did Michelle Obama think of the United States before her husband decided he wanted to run the place?
“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”

the only thing she is proud about is that people are actually believing the stuff her husband is pushing.

Interesting how your source left out the word really in their quote of her. Smear at it's best when you only include one line of a speech and then even screw that one line up.
http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=49244
"What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something -- for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud."

I just went back to the original article, and found that the word "really" is in it now. However, I did a direct copy/paste of the article when I first posted the article, with no changes, as I always do. The word "really" was not in the original article at the time, and my quote of the source was 100% accurate.
Looks like the original author, Sasha Issenberg of www.boston.com, changed his/her "quote" some time after posting his/her article the first time, inserting the word "really" at a later time. I quoted the article AND the title accurately, as of the time it was posted.
I apologize for using an unreliable source, Sasha Issenberg. THAT will not happen again.
However, I will continue to copy/past exactly accurate quotes from articles, and list their authors, as I did this time and have always done.

No prob, still means about the same thing but it always makes me suspicious when articles leave out key words when quoting people. Glad they fixed it, I went to your link as well and it wasn’t there earlier.

Michelle Obama today said that “for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction.”
Really proud of her country for the first time? Michelle Obama is 44 years old. She has been an adult since 1982. Can it really be there has not been a moment during that time when she felt proud of her country? Forget matters like the victory in the Cold War; how about only things that have made liberals proud — all the accomplishments of inclusion? How about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1991? Or Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s elevation to the Supreme Court? Or Carol Moseley Braun’s election to the Senate in 1998? How about the merely humanitarian, like this country’s startling generosity to the victims of the tsunami? I’m sure commenters can think of hundreds more landmarks of this sort. Didn’t she even get a twinge from, say, the Olympics?
Mrs. Obama was speaking at a campaign rally, so it is easy to assume she was merely indulging in hyperbole. Even so, it is very revealing.
It suggests, first, that the pseudo-messianic nature of the Obama candidacy is very much a part of the way the Obamas themselves are feeling about it these days. If they don’t get a hold of themselves, the family vanity is going to swell up to the size of Phileas Fogg’s hot-air balloon and send the two of them soaring to heights of self-congratulatory solipsism that we’ve never seen before.
Second, it suggests the Obama campaign really does have its roots in New Class leftism, according to which patriotism is not only the last refuge of a scoundrel, but the first refuge as well — that America is not fundamentally good but flawed, but rather fundamentally flawed and only occasionally good. There’s something for John McCain to work with here.
And third, that Michelle Obama — from the middle-class South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Princeton 85, Harvard Law 88, associate at Sidley and Austin, and eventually a high-ranking official at the University of Chicago — may not be proud of her country, but her life, like her husband’s, gives me every reason to be even prouder of the United States.

there is a difference between being proud and being REALLY proud.
I am always proud of my children. When my son conducted the large chorus for the Christmas performance of the Messiah - and sang the countertenor solos - this past year, I was REALLY proud.

But that's not what she's saying. She stated that now, now that her husband is running for President, now that he is being embraced by the American public, now, for the first time in her adult life, she is proud of America, proud of her country. Really? There has been nothing in the last twenty five years that made her proud of her country? Not all the financial aid to impoverished nations? Not all of the medical and emergency aid the U.S. doles out to countries that suffer tragic natural disasters? Nothing? Are you kidding me?
Her words can only be interpreted one way. Only her husband’s run for president has made her proud of America. This is terribly narcissistic and self-centered. Sad really.

Where has Michelle Obama been misquoted? Except for the initial omission of the word "really," are her words not accurate? The word "really" does not effectively change what was said or how it is interpreted. Perhaps one could argue that until the success of her husband's Presidential campaign, she was only a little proud of her country and now she is really proud, but it still doesn't sound good and comes across as, as I stated before, narcissistic and self-centered.
Kind of a Sally Field moment: "They like me...they really like me..."
In this day of instant news, one must be cognisant of how their words will be received and interpreted.

Fox News has the original video up. Michelle Obama did not use the word "really" The original quote is accurate.
However, she did begin to use a word that seemed to start with R, then seemed to cut herself off, and continue with the rest of the line. It came out, "For the first time in my adult life, I'm ri__ proud of my country."
Maybe she meant to say "really". Why did she cut off her own word, if that's what it was? But the fact is, she didn't say, "For the first time in my adult life, I'm really proud of my country".

I think that #2 is a reasonable definition of what she meant to say. was it perhaps hyperbole? Sure. Can I imagine that she has been - at some level - proud of her country most all the time between 1985 and today? Yes I can. (I know that I personally have always been proud to be an American, but there have been some days when I wasn't very proud of what we, as a country, were involved in) Can I imagine that she actually has been REALLY proud of her country more times than this one time since 1985? Sure. Can I imagine that, when compared to today, those other times might pale in comparision. Absolutely. Do I think it is hilarious that the right wants to make this a big deal and paint Michelle Obama out to be a woman who slimes America? Hilarious and way too predictable.

Sure. Can I imagine that, when compared to today, those other times might pale in comparision. Absolutely. Do I think it is hilarious that the right wants to make this a big deal and paint Michelle Obama out to be a woman who slimes America? Hilarious and way too predictable.
:laugh2:
It would be absolutely un-american for our two parties to not nit pick each other to death. Particularly during a presidential election. It's a great show if you don't take it seriously.

(I know that I personally have always been proud to be an American, but there have been some days when I wasn't very proud of what we, as a country, were involved in)

Can I imagine that she actually has been REALLY proud of her country more times than this one time since 1985? Sure.
