The President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) died today. He was a good man and will definitely be missed.

How do you know he was a good man? I'd say he wasn't...

Romans Chapter 3:
10As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God.
12All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one."[c]

Why does that sound like it's being taken out of context?

it is imo taken out of context, IF memory serves me...

I THINK the rest of the passage goes in to saying except through Jesus Christ, are we saved.... we all fall short of the Glory of God basically, we get our salvation thru the death of Jesus Christ not by our works, none of us are worthy to see God on our own, without Jesus's sacraficial blood wiping us clean, is the basic message of the passage, is my understanding of it....???

Butttttttttt, I am going to go look it up now, just to be sure! :D

Good man by whose standards? God's or mans?

As -Cp pointed out, the Bible teaches that no one is good by the standards of God. Yet, by the standards of man, President Hinckley may have been a very good man. When all is said and done, Mr. Hinckley will have to answer to God.

God will do with him as he sees fit... may God have mercy upon his soul.

Why does that sound like it's being taken out of context?
ok, it was most certainly taken out of context imho.

looks like some Christians were trying to say they were better than the Jews or visa versa, it goes on to say that both of us answer to God, through the Law in one way or another but the Jews are held under the Law, and neither is better than the other...we all fall short...then it goes in to the part that cp posts, then it goes to say this:

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Then it goes on to say how we become righteous:

Righteousness Through Faith

21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

okay, i am sorry to add this religious stuff to a thread that was not meant to be religious...:eek: but cp started it!!! nanny nanny boo hoo! LOL

oh wait, dmp is missing in action and not here anymore to ban me or neg rep me....all should be ok then! :laugh2:

I took -Cp's point to be that no man can be considered "good" because of his own works, and that righteousness only comes from God through Christ - which, JD, is what I think I hear you saying also.
